Red-faced cops were forced to admit three fearsome wolves spotted prowling a pretty Lancashire village were German Shepherd dogs.
Panicked residents in Barton, Lancs., rang police after hearing eerie howls and spotting what looked like wild predators roaming the neighborhood.
Officers scrambled to the scene and confirmed they were hunting “wolf-type animals” which locals described as either wolves, coyotes, or even golden jackals.
The animals were quickly rounded up and taken to safety before being passed to Preston City Council’s animal welfare team.
Tests have now confirmed the animals were in fact a breed of German Shepherd dog.
A council spokesperson said: "The dogs were handed to our stray dog contractor and they are safely in their kennels.
