Shenandoah County voters turned out in force Tuesday, with 78 percent of registered voters casting ballots in the Nov. 4 general election and reaffirming the county’s reputation as one of Virginia’s most reliably Republican strongholds.

Republican candidates continued to dominate countywide, maintaining large margins in both state and local offices.

In the governor’s race, the Republican ticket carried Shenandoah County with about 69 percent of the vote to Democrats’ 31 percent. Statewide, Democrat Abigail Spanberger was elected Virginia’s first woman governor, defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, a Frederick County resident. Democrats Ghazala Hashmi and Jay Jones also won the lieutenant governor and attorney general races, respectively.
