RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - All eyes are on Virginia as Democrat Abigail Spanberger wins the governor’s race against Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, becoming the Commonwealth’s first female governor.
“Just a few minutes ago, Adam said to our daughters, your mom is going to be the Governor of Virginia,” said Spanberger during her victory speech on Tuesday night. “I can guarantee those words have never been spoken in Virginia ever before.”
Lauren Bell, a political science professor at Randolph-Macon College, said this has been a historic moment hundreds of years in the making for Virginia.
“Virginia is way behind a lot of our peers in terms of electing a woman governor,” she said.
