KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Former Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers has been federally indicted on charges of making false statements and violating the civil rights of individuals in custody, adding to his mounting legal troubles that include a $300,000 civil lawsuit and the loss of his law enforcement license .
The federal charges come as Childers faces a separate civil lawsuit filed by Jerold Edward Waters Jr., who has sought damages for alleged privacy violations and wrongful arrest stemming from a romantic dispute.
The lawsuit stems from an August 2023 confrontation at a steakhouse between Waters and then-Sheriff Childers. Waters was dating Childers’ cousin, who worked as a counselor for the Ray County Sheriff’s Office.
