KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Former Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers has been federally indicted on six felony counts for allegedly using excessive force against inmates and falsifying a police report to cover up his actions.

The federal indictment, filed Oct. 28, alleges Childers violated the civil rights of multiple individuals in custody between 2022 and 2024, including grabbing a handcuffed pretrial detainee by the throat and grinding an inmate’s face into the ground.

The indictment alleged that Childers:

grabbed a pretrial detainee by the throat while the person was handcuffed, not resisting, and posed no threat, causing bodily injury.

pushed, shoved and struck an arrestee while the person was in a holding cell, not resisting, and posed no threat, causing bodily injury.
