KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A memorial honoring two people killed by a Kansas City police officer in 2023 was found burned just a week before their families expected to finalize a wrongful death settlement.

Marcell Nelson and Kristen Fairchild were shot and killed by a Kansas City police officer on June 9, 2023. The incident is the center of an ongoing wrongful death lawsuit. Family members have gathered at 31st and Van Brunt to honor their memories since the shooting.

The memorial had been at the site at 31st Street and Van Brunt Boulevard for more than two years before it was discovered burned last Friday.
