MAINE, USA — Tens of thousands of Mainers turned out to the polls on Tuesday, and a majority voted yes on Question 2 , ushering in a new “red flag law" in Maine.
Under the new measure, family or household members will have the ability to petition a court for an “Extreme Risk Protection Order," or ERPO, to get a persons firearms taken away. If the court finds the individual poses a significant danger to themselves or others, it can temporarily prohibit them from possessing their guns.
This law will not replace Maine’s existing "yellow flag law," which has been in place since 2020. Instead, it will operate alongside it.
