CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Two people died Wednesday afternoon after a gray sedan drove into the river off of River Road, officials said.
Around 2:30 p.m., units responded to the water near 779 River Road after being alerted to a vehicle submerged, according to the St. John’s Fire District.
Witnesses told first responders they saw the sedan travel off the bridge and into the water below. Crews were able to recover the overturned vehicle.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office is on the scene and has not yet identified the deceased.
River Road, between Main Road and Brownswood Road, is expected to be closed for an extended period while crews investigate the scene.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
