LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- Nearly two-thirds of Lansing voters voted to approve a new city charter Tuesday night, and Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope said the new changes will be implemented between 2026 and 2030.
Key among the changes is the adoption of a new election process and addition of a new city council seat. The new charter, which is like the city’s constitution, will expand the Lansing City Council from 8 members to 9 members by adding a new Ward for representation on the council. The new document also consolidates all elections – city council, clerk and mayor to once every four years.
But don’t expect those changes to happen overnight.
“So, it begins kicking in in the 2027 election,” Swope told 6 News. “Council members elected at that time will be under the current structure. So
