The Boston Red Sox are looking to go back-to-back… in their pursuit of third baseman Alex Bregman.
Bregman exercised the opt-out clause in his contract and entered free agency on Monday, according to numerous sources, forgoing the final two years left on the three-year deal he signed last offseason.
Bregman opting out doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll leave, however, as the veteran’s ultimate goal is widely believed to be earning a longer term deal after slashing .273/.360/.462 despite suffering an ill-timed injury, and showcasing his leadership skills with the club’s young core during his lone season in Boston.
The Red Sox will want him back in the fold, and received some good news about their upcoming pursuit from Jon Heyman of The New York Post on Wednesday.
