JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - New high-tech security cameras are keeping watch across downtown Jackson.

Downtown Jackson Partners installed six police-grade cameras in key spots, including Smith Park, Capitol and Congress Streets and near Hal & Mal's.

The goal is to help improve safety and deter crime. The cameras send live footage to law enforcement and Downtown Jackson Partners for real-time monitoring. Officials said the goal is to solve and stop crime.

“We want the criminal elements to know when they come to downtown Jackson, they're being recorded. So, maybe they won't do what they're thinking about doing. So, you know, we're hoping that this is going to work in our favor, not only to help catch the criminal element, but to deter the criminal element, as well," said Capitol Police Chief
