BEND, Ore. - The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is set to close the east side of McKenzie Pass, OR 242, on Thursday, Nov. 6, signaling the start of the full seasonal closure. The west side of the pass was closed earlier on Oct. 14.
This year, ODOT has moved the east-side gate one mile closer to Sisters to create a safer turnaround area for drivers. McKenzie Pass, known for its scenic views, closes annually as winter approaches due to weather, cost, and logistical challenges. Vehicles are prohibited beyond the gates during the closure, but non-vehicle recreational users can still access the area at their own risk. The U.S. Forest Service advises following its guidelines for safe recreation in the National Forest. Due to unmaintained winter conditions, the area can be hazardous,
