SOUTHWEST, Va. (WJHL) - Republican Virginia House Delegate Israel O'Quinn said that while the statewide election results did not go the way he preferred, he is not surprised by the results that come from Southwest Virginia.
"Virginia's an interesting state where the really red areas are very, very red, the blue areas are very, very blue," O'Quinn said. "And then you have a group of sort of purple counties that sort of end up making a difference in a statewide election."
Democrats swept the three top state offices of governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. Democrats also claimed another 13 seats in the House of Delegates, further adding to the party's majority.
Abigail Spanberger won the gubernatorial election and will serve as the Commonwealth's first female governor.
