RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond Public Schools is launching a new campaign to address food insecurity as thousands of students in the division are at risk following some reductions to some assistance programs.

RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras wrote in his newsletter that the recent changes are expected to increase food insecurity for nearly half of RPS families who qualify for SNAP benefits, which comes down to about 6,100 households.

“When families struggle to access food, it has a direct impact on student health, attendance, and learning,” Kamras said.

The school division is now partnering with Feed More and other groups for the RPS Cares Campaign, a community-wide effort to ensure families have access to food and support.
