HOOKSETT, N.H. —

A Chinese national accused of being part of an organized gift card scam in New Hampshire is asking for his bail to be changed.

Sheng An Chen faces two counts of receiving stolen property.

In court on Wednesday, a judge took up the issue of bail, which was previously set at $500,000.

The defense asked for that to be modified. The judge has decided to take that motion under advisement.

According to state prosecutors, Chen was involved in an organized ring through which people would steal unactivated gift cards from various stores and record the information needed to use the cards before returning them. Then, the alleged thief would wait for a regular customer to buy and activate the card.
