BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The last time a UPS plane crashed before Tuesday was in Birmingham in August 2013, killing the pilot and co-pilot.
After the UPS plane explosion in Louisville on Tuesday evening, memories of that tragic morning are resurfacing for those who were there.
The 2013 crash happened about a half of a mile from the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Former CBS 42 reporter Rick Jackson covered the story that Wednesday.
"When I saw the headlines, my heart dropped because it took me back to that early morning in 2013," Jackson said. "I could still smell the smoke from the engine all over again."
Jackson described the 2013 crash as a tragic event that nevertheless revealed the strength and compassion of the Birmingham community.
