LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Do not be alarmed if you spot a low-flying helicopter over the Las Vegas valley this week.

Starting Thursday, Nov. 6, the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration will begin aerial radiological surveys across Las Vegas and the Strip, ahead of the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

The helicopter will fly at low altitudes as part of a routine safety measure used during major events, including New Year’s Eve, to gather baseline readings and ensure there are no public safety risks.

Officials thank the public as preparations continue.
