VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A debate that Virginia Beach voters faced for years is one step closer to ending.
On Election Day Tuesday, Virginia Beach voters were given a referendum on their ballots with the option to either support a 10-1 voting system or not to, which would mean support for a modified 7-3-1 system.
In the 10-1 system, the city is broken into 10 districts, and you get two votes: one for your district’s city council representative and another for the mayor.
10-1 is the system Virginia Beach used since 2022, but it was never written into the city charter, causing several debates and lawsuits.
On the other hand, in a 7-3-1 system, there are seven districts, and you get five votes: one vote for your district’s representative, three votes for at-large representatives and one vote
