ST PAUL, Minn. — For the first time, St. Paul will be led by a Hmong woman. Kaohly Her defeated incumbent Melvin Carter Tuesday night to become the next mayor.

That win is something Hmong community groups are celebrating.

"I think our children can really learn from and be proud that we have someone that looks like them, that will continue to inspire them, and that is really doing something well," Mee Vang, president of The United Hmong Family , said.

Vang says she stayed up to watch the results Tuesday night, hoping to see Her win. She says with 2025 being the 50th anniversary of the first Hmong family in Minnesota, Her's win cements that legacy.
