SWANSBORO, N.C. (WITN) - As the government shutdown reaches day 36, the Town of Swansboro is partnering with Onslow Community Outreach to collect food donations for military families in need.

With uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits, town officials are asking residents to donate nonperishable food items.

Donations will be given to Onslow Community Outreach in Jacksonville for distribution to military families.

“Swansboro City Council has asked that we try to really look for those who are military-connected, either active duty, retired, or GS workers, and focus the food distribution from that collection to those individuals,” said CJ Crooks, executive director of Onslow Community Outreach.

Mayor William Justice said the goal is to find a way to help the community during the shutdown.
