LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Each Wednesday, students are welcomed to the Tates Creek Community Center by One Lexington director Devine Carama and volunteers to enjoy a meal.
“It’s about building relationships because one day that relationship will be needed to mediate a conflict, to connect their family to resources,” Carama said.
It also gives students time to reflect on their day at school with mentors and peers.
“These are kids. We don’t want them to lose hope and so we have to maintain that. I think outreach like this helps to do that,” Carama said.
Carama says he understands how important it is to show students they’re not walking through life alone. He says the journey takes a village.
Volunteer Dawn Webb says this is an opportunity to help students navigate big emotions.
