MACON, Ga. — Mercer University's new School of Medicine is breaking ground this week on Riverside Drive , and nearby businesses are thrilled.
The $75 million project marks the start of redevelopment in the Riverside Drive area. The school will stand on the same street as the former Ramada Hotel, which is expected to become a hotel and convention center.
Nearby businesses are anticipating the more revenue and customers from the new campus, including Satterfield's BBQ which sits across the street from the future school.
Owner Ben Hampton says the last few years have been difficult at the restaurant, but the campus is a light at the end of the tunnel.
"We have prayed on this for so many years and for it to finally come to fruition and be happening is very exciting for us," Hampton said.
