HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Among his many achievements, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole founded the Hawaiian Civic Club and spearheaded the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act.

He also championed water sports, and his canoe dominated the racing scene.

”Its heyday was really between 1906 and 1910. But the impact of its memory has lived on for many generations. It’s considered the first canoe of the sport,” said Bishop Museum curator Sarah Kuaiwa.

The 40-foot-long Koa canoe was named the Aa. For 100 years, Bishop Museum has been co-steward of the canoe, which it recently featured in its “Kua Lanakila!” exhibition.

On Saturday, for the first time in more than a decade, the canoe will return to the ocean.
