CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Republican state lawmakers sent a letter to North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein on Wednesday, urging him to deploy the National Guard to Charlotte.
In the letter issued Wednesday, Nov. 5 , Republican lawmakers cited a 200% increase in the murder rate in Uptown compared to this time last year. That 200% increase appears to come from a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police report focused solely on Uptown, Charlotte’s “downtown” area.
That report shows that three murders were reported in Uptown between Jan. 1 and Oct. 5, 2024, compared with nine murders during the same period in 2025.
Though homicides in Uptown may have risen, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police reported last month that overall violent crime is down across the city.
