A welding explosion sparked a barn fire near the village of Fairground on Tuesday and left one person with burn injuries.

The victim is in hospital receiving treatment, the fire department said in a press release on Wednesday.

Deputy Fire Chief James Robertson said the fire started because of a “small explosion” during “welding operations” outside the barn.

About 20 firefighters from three stations responded to the call near Fairground, in the west end of the rural county, around 12:30 p.m.

“The fire was largely extinguished prior to the arrival of fire crews, with damage limited to the exterior,” Robertson said in an email.
