Fireball explodes in the Bronx

Seven firefighters were injured after a car exploded in New York City, according to officials.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) received reports of a fire. When firefighters arrived at the scene, multiple cars and piles of rubbish were on fire.

Video shows the moment the fire explodes, sending a fireball into the air from the area where firefighters were working to contain the scene. The fireball was multiple stories high, and a bystander captured the moment smoke and flames blocked the view from a window facing the scene.

Seven firefighters were injured in the explosion, and three more were hospitalized, Chief of Department John Esposito said in a statement posted to X.

Firefighters receive burns on their hands and face

Five firefighters received burns on their hands and face in the explosion, said Esposito. The three firefighters who have been hospitalized sustained serious burns that are non-life-threatening.

"Our firefighters are awake, alert and speaking, but they have some serious burns, and we'll be praying for them," said Esposito.

What caused the fire?

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the FDNY is investigating.
