California Governor Gavin Newsom is celebrating after Proposition 50, a measure aimed at countering Republican redistricting, received overwhelming approval.

In his victory address, the Governor delivered a message to his supporters, declaring, “The best is yet to come” in 2026, and urging other “blue states” to immediately enter the partisan redistricting battle ahead of next year’s crucial midterm elections.

The passage of Prop 50 allows California to redraw five U.S. House districts, making them more favorable to Democratic candidates. This mid-decade change was a direct retaliatory measure following Texas Republicans’ decision to redraw their own congressional maps, which intended to shift five House seats to the right.
