SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - On this edition of Throwback Thursday, Lori Kent with the Local Lou Podcast tells us about the 1938 National Corn Husking Competition.
“Eighty-seven years ago, on a cold and dreary November third, kind of like today, there was this huge corn husking contest. What I think is really interesting about it is how many people showed up to it. One hundred twenty-five thousand. , which was literally like ten percent of South Dakota’s population at the time,” said Kent.
The event took place on the Jensen Family Farm near Dell Rapids, with corn huskers from 11 different states competing in the 80-minute competition.
The event began with a two-mile parade with seven marching bands and a tent city set up at the Jensen farm.
