Flight capacity at 40 major airports across the United States must be reduced by 10% per Federal Aviation Administration requirements as a government shutdown continues to stress the air traffic control system.
While Iowa airports are not among those with forced cancellations, there could be a trickle-down effect at the Des Moines International Airport, said Sarah Hoodjer, communications and air service development manager. Officials with the FAA announced the reductions on Nov. 5 , so it is still too early to determine the implications on smaller airports.
"Des Moines isn’t one of the 40 airports listed on the FAA’s capacity reductions, but we could see some ripple effects if airlines adjust schedules nationally," Hoodjer told the Register on Nov. 6. "Right now, we don’t know the exte
