WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation have ordered airlines operating at 40 U.S. airports to significantly reduce flight schedules beginning Friday, November 7, as part of efforts to ease strain on the nation’s aviation system during the ongoing government shutdown.

According to the FAA, the reductions are aimed at maintaining safety — the agency’s top priority — while managing limited staffing and operational resources.

United Airlines announced that it will comply with the directive by scaling back regional and domestic mainline flights that do not connect the airline’s major hub airports. Long-haul international and hub-to-hub routes will continue operating as scheduled.
