SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Notre Dame freshman kicker Erik Schmidt will be the team’s starting kicker on Saturday against Navy, head coach Marcus Freeman announced on Thursday.

Freeman said the decision was partially due to the health of redshirt senior Noah Burnette, who has been dealing with a hip injury this season and has missed a couple of games because of it.

Freeman also said that he feels it’s what’s best for the team right now.

Schmidt is 12 of 13 on extra points and 0 for 2 on field goals this season. He made his only PAT this past Saturday against Boston College but missed a 35-yard field goal that would’ve given Notre Dame a two-score lead just before halftime.
