A man who killed his cellmate inside a Mississippi detention center in 2023 will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens announced Wednesday that Avery Bankston, 38, had been found guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of Tyrone Wilson, 50, at the Raymond Detention Center. At the time of the crime, Bankston was a pretrial detainee for burglary.

Around midnight on Feb. 23, 2023, Hinds County sheriff’s deputies and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation responded to a call from the Raymond Detention Center. Upon arrival, they found Wilson dead, lying on his back inside the two’s cell.
