PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Two schools in Portland have secured their perimeters due to reported U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the area, according to a message sent to families Thursday morning.

Portland Public Schools sent the letter after receiving reports that ICE agents were near Cesar Chavez School and George Middle School. Other nearby schools — including Astor, James John, Roosevelt, and Sitton — are “maintaining heightened situational awareness and monitoring for any updates,” the letter said.

According to PPS, school leaders are also in the process of developing dismissal plans to “ensure students can return home safely and smoothly this afternoon.”
