GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Wisconsin Supreme Court is determining whether to take up a case against a handful of sheriff’s offices around the state, including Brown County.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed the case earlier this fall, claiming the law enforcement agencies are illegally holding people in custody longer than state law allows.

The counties are disputing the claims, saying they are following agreed to, authorized and trained protocols that allow them to transfer or detain a suspect for federal custody.

The question the ACLU is asking the justices is whether law enforcement can hold someone beyond the time allowed for their original arrest. The ACLU filed the case in September on behalf of Voces De La Frontera.
