MENASHA, Wis. (WBAY) - United Way Fox Cities says they’re seeing a significant spike in calls to their 211 helpline as more people reach out for help putting food on the table.

The organization is reporting a 42% jump in calls starting in mid-October, with food assistance making up most of the increase.

Calls for food pantries shot up from 14 to more than 100 in a week, with over 360 referrals total.

United Way says it’s the first time food needs have surpassed housing and rental help, a spike they haven’t seen since the pandemic, as families struggle with delayed SNAP benefits.

Officials say when families struggle to put food on the table, other essential needs often go unmet.
