POLK COUNTY, Iowa ( IOWA CAPITAL DISPATCH ) - Polk County pledged Thursday to allocate $1 million to local food organizations during the lapse in funding for federal nutrition programs.

Due to a lawsuit, the federal government is set to partially fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program during the shutdown, but experts say the rollout of these partial payments could take weeks.

Polk County Supervisor Matt McCoy said Thursday that SNAP recipients don’t know when that money will show up in their accounts.

“Because this is fluid, and because people are concerned about where their food will come from, they’re hitting the food banks now,” McCoy said.
