Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said police responded to American History High School on Montgomery Street around 12:51 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a suspicious person with a firearm inside the building.
School administrators immediately placed the building on lockdown as officers arrived and conducted a comprehensive search of the premises.
Following their investigation, police determined that the incident was a false public alarm.
The lockdown was lifted shortly afterward, and classes resumed their regular schedule.
Authorities continue to investigate the source of the false report.
