A man has died in a workplace incident on the M1 to Raymond Terrace extension project overnight.

About 11.50pm Thursday November 6, emergency services were called to the construction site on New England Highway, Tarro, following reports a man had been hit by a vehicle.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter police were told a male staff member was standing behind a parked truck when he was allegedly hit by a material transfer vehicle, travelling towards the truck.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

IN NEWS TODAY:

The male driver was taken to Maitland Hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established and police have commenced an investigation into the incident.
