A formidable mosquito hunter with tiger-striped wings has been named Australia's top insect for 2025.

The graphic flutterer dragonfly ( Rhyothemis graphiptera ) captured more than a quarter of all votes in an October online poll to snare the title of 2025 ABC Australian Insect of the Year.

It joins 2024's champion — the blue banded bee ( Amegilla cingulata ) — as a winner of the national award.

Nearly 24,000 Australians voted for the second ABC Australian Insect of the Year, with 25.7 per cent (6,137 votes) choosing the graphic flutterer dragonfly as their favourite invertebrate from a field of six insect finalists selected by an expert panel.

The greengrocer cicada ( Cyclochilla australiasiae ) was chosen by 18.7 per cent of respondents (4,482 votes) to finish second, ahead of
