NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – New Mexico officials are appealing the federal government's decision to deny nearly $100 million in disaster funds for local communities affected by years of floods and fires. Since 2020, the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said they have applied for $119 million from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

But the federal government denied all but a fraction of those funds, approving less than $20 million. Now, the state is appealing that denial, hoping the feds will reconsider.
