ENFIELD, Conn. (WFSB) - About 7,500 water customers in Enfield, Somers and East Windsor are facing a proposed 72% increase in their quarterly water bills.
The Hazardville Water Company has requested the rate increase, which would add an average of $22 per month to customer bills. The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, which regulates the state’s water companies, is reviewing the proposal.
“Absolutely ridiculous. I’m sorry, I’m so angry. This is absolutely unheard of,” said Doris Poirier of Enfield.
Many customers are on fixed incomes and say the increase is unfair.
Hazardville Water Company says its expenses have increased 11% over the last five years while revenue has grown just 3.5%. The company claims it hasn’t increased rates in 16 years.
