PUTNAM, Conn. (WFSB) - A monthly food giveaway organized by veterans has become a lifeline for hundreds of people in northeastern Connecticut as demand continues to grow.

The Danielson Veterans Coffeehouse distributes 20,000 pounds of food on the first Thursday of each month at the Farmers Market Pavilion. About 75 volunteer veterans pack food boxes and hand them out to those in need.

Cars line up on Kennedy Drive for miles, with people arriving hours before the giveaway starts.

“It seems like it’s more every month that we do this,” said Norman Deloge, a volunteer with the Danielson Veterans Coffeehouse.

The organization distributed 400 food boxes Thursday, up from their usual amount, due to increased demand.
