WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Newman University men’s basketball team held a special signing Thursday, welcoming a player who finds refuge in the sport amid a health battle.
Ten-year-old Ryker Ammons lives with a chronic illness known as “short bowel syndrome,” a condition in which the body doesn’t absorb enough fluids and nutrients from foods. This requires Ammons to live off of IVs for 14 hours a day. Through this, his parents say that basketball brings a sense of excitement and normalcy.
Through Team Impact , an organization that connects children facing health challenges to college athletic teams, Ammons got his signing day with Newman, the youngest signee in the history of the Jets program.
