WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Teen speeding tickets can put a strain not only on the person who received the ticket but also on their families. One town is trying a different approach to teach teens about driving safety that’s less expensive, handing out essay assignments instead of tickets.

Kendra Mast, a teen from Leon, Kansas, was pulled over for speeding and didn’t know what to expect.

“I didn’t really know what was gonna happen, it was definitely nerve-wracking,” Mast said.

She and her family soon discovered another way to make up for the ticket: writing an essay on driver safety—a relief for Mast and her mother.

“It’s also a relief to find out you can do an essay. It helps keep it off the insurance, it helps her not have a record,” said Sheena Mast, Kendra’s mother.
