HIBBING — A two-question referendum put forth by the Hibbing school district failed to garner support with the majority of voters on Election Day, leaving the district still facing a $2.6 million budget deficit.
On Tuesday, voters gave a resounding “no” in response to ballot questions that would have allowed the district to raise the local property tax, bringing in $2.6 million per year, for the next 10 years.
Voters were asked to consider two $1.3 million levies, the first of which would have gone toward classroom operations, funding day-to-day school needs, supplies, programming, staffing salaries and utilities. The second capital projects levy would have been used for the district’s capital and technology needs, including equipment and software used for career and technical education
