PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - As Portland police resume enforcement of the city’s public camping ban, officers have contacted over 100 people in the first five days.
Officers found 81 people in violation of the ordinance, issued 83 warnings, and handed out seven citations. Forty people were arrested, mostly on outstanding warrants. Ten people were booked on new charges unrelated to the camping law.
The city said 39 people accepted shelter beds and spent the night indoors, while 41 accepted other services. Two people entered deflection programs that divert them from the criminal system into treatment or support services.
Of the 100+ people contacted, approximately 81% were found in violation of the ordinance.
