The New Mexico Legislature will be back for a special session Monday to extend state food aid, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced Thursday afternoon.

The session is expected to last one day, the governor noted in a news release. The Legislature will convene at noon Monday at the Capitol.

The state distributed $30 million in food aid Nov. 1 as a stopgap measure, designed to last until Nov. 10.

The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program was suspended amid the federal shutdown, and although courts have ordered the government to pay the benefits, the timing and amount remain unclear.

“We acted fast in October when the Trump administration abandoned New Mexican families, and now the legislature is coming back to finish the job,” said Lujan Grisham in the news release.
