GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Monday marks the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The most famous shipwreck on the Great Lakes, the massive iron ore freighter went down in a November storm on Lake Superior. The wreck was immortalized in a hit song By Gordon Lightfoot.
The exact cause of the wreck is still debated, and a new perspective is offered in this new book “Wrecked: The Edmund Fitzgerald and the Sinking of the American Economy,” co-authored by Lawrence University Professor Jerald Podair...and a familiar face in Northeast Wisconsin.
The “Fitz” has strong ties to Sturgeon Bay; it spent many winters at Bay Shipbuilding for repairs, and two Sturgeon Bay natives were among the 29 men lost in the wreck.
