EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - East Lansing’s Parks, Recreation, and Arts Department is contemplating its next move after voters rejected a proposed millage on Tuesday.

The millage would have provided a dedicated funding source for city programs and facilities. Unofficial results show about 61% of voters opposed the proposal, which would have amended the city charter to allow an additional 2 mills for parks operations and maintenance.

The increase was expected to bring in roughly $2.9 million each year to support facilities like the Hannah Community Center, Northern Tier Trail, and city-run youth and arts programs.

Interim Parks, Recreation, and Arts Director Justin Drwencke said officials understand why some residents were hesitant to approve the measure.
