Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she will not seek re-election at the end of her term in 2027 . The announcement marked a nearly four-decade career in Congress and as a dominant force within the Democratic Party.
"With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative," Pelosi said in a video addressed to her constituents in the San Francisco Bay Area . "It was the faith that you had placed in me and the latitude that you have given me that enabled me to shatter the marble ceiling."
Throughout her career, Pelosi became a woman of many firsts. She took on roles as House minority whip in 2001, House minority leader in 2003, and speaker of the House in 2007.
